When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Hashing is a one-way mathematical function that turns personal data into a string of nondescript text that cannot be reversed or decoded. In the context of cybersecurity, hashing is a way to keep sensitive information and data — including passwords, messages, and documents — secure and private.The Google Data Manager hashes data using the SHA256 algorithm, which is the industry standard for one-way hashing.

In addition, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Meta Pixels to track user interactions on our website. These technologies help us analyze the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns and improve the user experience. They may collect data such as pages viewed, actions taken, and device information. The data shared with these platforms is anonymized and aggregated to ensure your privacy.

Data Sharing and Cross-Border Transfers

The hashed data from Google Ads enhanced conversion tracking may be transferred to and processed by Google servers located outside Canada, including in the United States. Google’s Data Processing Terms cover the obligations related to how Google processes personal data and  includes clauses related to data processing and the use of personal data in advertising.

Data collected through Google GA4 and the Meta Pixel may also be processed by servers located outside Canada. These platforms are committed to safeguarding your data in accordance with their respective privacy policies.
